Nawaz asks Qazi to reconsider decision to resign
LAHORE: Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif urged Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) President Qazi Hussain Ahmad on Sunday to reconsider his decision to resign from the National Assembly. Qazi however told Nawaz on the phone that he had thought the decision through and was satisfied. He said that after the carnage at Lal Masjid and Jamia Hafsa, he could not tolerate being part of the “non-credible assemblies”. He said that when elected representatives could no longer protect the rights of the people and put a stop to state terrorism, tough decisions were better than remaining in “rubber stamp” assemblies. Sharif told Qazi that the opposition should not give way to the government so easily. He urged Qazi to shelve his resignation for now so that if President Musharraf was re-elected, the entire opposition could resign together. Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Central Finance Secretary Malik Pevaiz, who returned from London on Sunday afternoon, said that Nawaz Sharif had also told PML-N Chairman Raja Zaffarul Haq, Chaudhry Nisar Ali, Syed Zaffar Ali Shah and other central leaders to meet Qazi and convince him not to resign. He said that before taking any such decision, Qazi should take the leadership of the newly formed All-Parties Democratic Movement into confidence. He also urged the MMA Central Executive Council to use its influence to convince Qazi to withdraw his decision. qamar jabbar
